| Overview |
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is simply the Americanized version of Puyo Puyo. Sega didn't think the name "Puyo Puyo," or its unique puzzle system, would do well in the American market. How could they make it sell? Slap the rediculously popular Sonic franchise onto it! While it's loosely based on The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (commonly called AOSTH) the cartoon series that aired at the same time, it maintains all of the gameplay and keeps much of the art from the original Puyo Puyo.
Mean Bean Machine isn't the only incarnation of Puyo Puyo to hit the US. On Nintendo's turf, Kirby Avalanche does the same thing. |

Robotnik has schemed a new plan to "rid Mobius of music and fun forever." He calls it the "Mean Bean Steaming Machine," and he uses it to turn the beans of Beanville into his robot slaves to "serve his evil purposes." Hey, I warned you that it was based on AOSTH...
As...Sonic, I suppose, you must battle against Robotnik's robots in challenges so fierce and intense they can only be expressed in a puzzle game. There are 13 stages, each getting progressively harder and the 13th stage being a battle against Robotnik himself.
