Overview
Sonic R was Sega's attempt to save the Saturn by giving owners a Sonic game. Sadly, the fans were able to see right through the plan and they realized that this wasn't the comeback they were looking for. While it was a solid racer by itself, it couldn't compare to Nintendo's Mario Kart 64. It was the second Sonic game developed by Traveller's Tales, the first being the less-than-spectacular Sonic 3D Blast. Sonic World would like to thank PaintGamma for taking the time to capture the screenshots used on this page from the PC version of Sonic R.

Characters
A racing game isn't very diverse if it doesn't have a lot of different characters. Sonic R certainly has enough characters, but they're extremely unbalanced. Click on a character's portrait or to learn their unique abilites (if any) and skills.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Speed: High
Acceleration: Very High
Handling: Poor
Special Ability (1): Spin Dash. Press "B" while stopped.
Special Ability (2): Double Jump. Press a jump button while still in the air after jumping.
How to Unlock: Available from Beginning.
Sonic is the fastest character from the start...but he also happens to have the worst handling.

Miles "Tails" Prower
Speed: Medium
Acceleration: High
Handling: Good
Special Ability (1): Spin Dash. Press "B" while stopped.
Special Ability (2): Propeller Flying. Press a jump button while still in the air after jumping. Control with the analog stick / directional pad and continue tapping a jump button to ascend.
How to Unlock: Available from Beginning.
Tails isn't the fastest, but he has the best handling out of starting characters. His flying ability is great for taking shortcuts.

Knuckles the Echidna
Speed: High
Acceleration: High
Handling: Average
Special Ability (1): Spin Dash. Press "B" while stopped.
Special Ability (2): Gliding. Press a jump button while still in the air after jumping and use the analog stick / directional pad to steer.
How to Unlock: Available from Beginning.
Knuckles is the most well-rounded character in the game. He's probably the best of the starting characters. Gliding can be very useful for going ahead of other racers by going over them as opposed to around them.

Amy Rose
Speed: Very Low
Acceleration: Low
Handling: Very High
Special Ability: Speed Boost. Press a jump button (A, C, or Y) when the boost icon (a tire) appears at the top of the screen.
How to Unlock: Available from Beginning.
Amy is the slowest racer in the game. Even though she has the best handling, it doesn't make up for the speed, but she can hover over water without sinking. Apparently, Amy realized that she sucked and had a complete makeover for her next game appearance, Sonic Adventure.

Eggman / Dr. Robotnik
Speed: Low
Acceleration: Low
Handling: Very High
Special Ability: Homing Missile. Press a jump button (A, C, or Y) when the target icon turns green.
How to Unlock: Rank 1st Place in Resort Island, Radical City, Regal Ruins, and Reactive Factory.
Eggman's handling is about on par with Amy's. His missile attack is near useless because it seldom works, but at least he can hover over water.

Metal Sonic
Speed: Very High
Acceleration: High
Handling: Very Low
How to Unlock: Win Challenge Race in Resort Island.
Metal Sonic is the fastest character under Super Sonic. His handling is terrible, but luckily, Sonic R doesn't require a lot of handling to win. He has no special abilities, but he has the highest jump out of any character in the game.

Tails Doll
Speed: Average
Acceleration: High
Handling: High
Special Ability: Hover. Press a jump button while still in the air after jumping. Control with the analog stick / directional pad and continue tapping a jump button to accelerate.
How to Unlock: Win Challenge Race in Radical City.
Tails Doll is universally accepted as the scariest character in Sonic history. He isn't much different from Tails.

Mecha Knuckles
Speed: High
Acceleration: High
Handling: High
Special Ability: Gliding. Press a jump button while still in the air after jumping and use the analog stick / directional pad to steer.
How to Unlock: Win Challenge Race in Reactive Factory.
Ok, so yes, "Metal Knuckles" is Sonic Team's official name, but he's still better known as "Mecha Knuckles" among fans. His abilities place him just under Super Sonic as the overall "best" in the opinion of the SW staff. As you can probably guess, he's very similar to Knuckles.

Eggrobo
Speed: Average
Acceleration: Average
Handling: Very High
Special Ability: Homing Missile. Press a jump button (A, C, or Y) when the target icon turns green.
How to Unlock: Win Challenge Race in Regal Ruins.
Eggrobo is almost identical to Eggman. He's a little faster, but it's usually difficult to see a difference. Unfortunately, Eggrobo can't hover over water.

Super Sonic
Speed: Very High
Acceleration: Very High
Handling: High
Special Ability (1): Spin Dash. Press "B" while stopped.
Special Ability (2): Double Jump. Press a jump button while still in the air after jumping.
How to Unlock: Collect all 7 Chaos Emeralds.
Obviously the best character in the game, playing as Super Sonic is an unfair advantage. He can hover over water if he's running fast enough.

Levels / Walkthrough
There are a total of five levels in Sonic R. Radiant Emerald, the fifth level, is unlocked when you unlock Eggman (place first on the first four courses). Each level has a different theme and equally horrid music. There's a different number of emeralds in each level with seven emeralds in all, but the way in which you collect them has changed from the traditional formula - rather than just grabbing an emerald in a course, you have to grab it and place first in the race. To unlock a character, you must collect all five coins in a course and then win the challenge one-on-one race after it. There are only five racers Your opponents are automatically picked by the game based on which characters you've unlocked:

<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-

The system is pretty simple to understand. Before unlocking Metal Sonic, you'll always face Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Robotnik (minus whatever character you're playing as, of course). After unlocking Metal Sonic, Amy no longer appears in races. For each additional character you unlock, another is knocked off the end of the chain...so if you have three new characters unlocked, Amy, Eggman, and Knuckles will no longer appear in race unless you play as them. When playing as Super Sonic, your opponents will be Metal Sonic, Mecha Knuckles, Tails Doll, and Eggrobo.
Resort Island
Emeralds:
Unlockable: Metal Sonic
Resort Island looks like the typical Green Hill clone. It's the only stage with one emerald and it's also the shortest track in the game. The boost after the second bridge is generally useless when you can take a shortcut by going through the trees to the right of it. If you're playing as Amy or Eggman, you can get an early lead by going over the water at the beginning.
Coin Locations:
- From the start of the course, run up the rocky, grey terrain at the first turn. The coin is under an arch formed by the rock.
- Continuing from the location above, keep left. Go straight through the sandy terrain - this coin is under another arch.
- The third coin is always out of the way, no matter what path you're taking. It's located on the island that's farthest in the top left corner of the lake area, almost directly across from the island after the first bridge.
- After the lake area, avoid the shortcut between the trees and take the path on the left after the fork-in-the-road. The coin is located on the side of the mountain.
- After collecting 20 coins, go through the door on the left just before the location of the second coin.
Emerald Locations:
- Blue Emerald: 50 Rings Required. After the second bridge on the regular path (just before the boost and the shortcut), go through the door on the left.
Radical City
Emeralds:
Unlockable: Tails Doll
Radical City is hardly "radical" at all - in fact, the beginning of the stage looks like the slums of a Metropolis. There's an unnecessary pinball-like area with bumpers halfway through the stage. Be careful not to fall off the slanted roads or you'll be forced to backtrack.
Coin Locations:
- From the start, continue along the regular path until you reach an area where you can fall off the course onto a new track. The hole in the wall is located on the left, so stick to the side after passing through the tunnel. The coin is up against the wall behind you when you land on the new track.
-Repeat the path from the first coin, but this time, jump over the gap instead of falling through it. Go over the construction barrier to find the coin.
- From the second coin, continue along the path until you see a second barrier. Jump over it to access the pinbal area - the coin is in the middle of the arena.
- Follow the path to the second coin until you reach the barrier, but this time, go straight past it. The coin is clearly visible further up the path.
- After collecting 20 coins, go through the door right before the boost that leads to the finish line. There's a coin in the middle of the detour.
Emerald Locations:
- Green Emerald: 20 Rings Required. From the location of the first coin and stay to the left. You'll fall off the side of the course into a new area with a 20 Ring door. Go in to get the emerald.
-Purple Emerald: 50 Rings Required. Follow the normal path. This emerald is in the first 50 ring door you come across. Alternatively, you can double jump to it as Sonic from the area under it...but you still end up paying 50 rings to get on that track anyways.
Regal Ruins
Emeralds:
Unlockable: Eggrobo
Regal Ruins look like the brainchild of Sonic Adventure's Mystic Ruins. Even though there are statues of echidnas littering the course, you won't unlock Knuckles' robotic counterpart here. This level features the only double-loop in the game - it's the exit to the orange emerald's hidden area.
Coin Locations:
- From the start, follow the normal path until just after you cross over the bridge. Take the path of rings to the left and go up the hill. You'll see it.
-From the start, immeadately go to the right on the plateau next to the bridge. Keep going until you reach a sign pointing left. Keep going straight, across the water through a small opening in the wall. Go up the ramp to the left to find the coin.
- After the second bridge on the regular path, jump on the spring to the left. It'll take you to the coin.
- Follow the normal path after the bridges and in the maze-like area with lots of turns. The coin is on the regular path in this area.
-From the start, make a left and follow the trail of rings up the path. The coin is right before the 50 ring door.
Emerald Locations:
- Gold Emerald: 50 Rings Required. Make a sharp left at the starting line and go up the slanted path. Follow the maze-like trail and be careful not to fall off. At the end is a 50 ring door with an emerald hidden inside.
-Orange Emerald: 20 Rings Required. Follow the normal path. There's a 20 ring door after the second bridge. The emerald is hidden in a box in the far left of the new room.
Reactive Factory
Emeralds:
Unlockable: Mecha Knuckles
Reactive Factory is the longest course in the game...however, there aren't very many alternate paths, so it's all about speed and cornering.
Coin Locations:
- From the start, go straight and you'll see the first coin sitting on top of a submarine in the distance.
-From the start, follow the regular path and take a right at the first sign, before the loop. In this back area, you'll see a spire with a moat around it. The coin is hidden behind the spire over the water.
- Following the regular path, go through the 20 ring door near the finish line. The coin is there, but you'll have to backtrack to get out.
- Follow the normal path and go straight after the speed booster. Take the path to the right after that to find the coin.
-Follow the same path as above and go straight. Take the first left and you'll find the coin.
Emerald Locations:
- Silver Emerald: 50 Rings Required. Follow the normal path and take a left immediately before the speed boost. Jump onto the island where you'll see a 50 ring door. The emerald will fall and land on a submarine.
-Red Emerald: 50 Rings Required. Follow the normal path and stop immediately after the loop. Go through the 50 ring door to get the emerald. Note that it takes a second for it to fall down, so wait for it to stop.
Radiant Emerald
Emeralds: (None)
Unlockable: (None)
Radiant Emerald is the most boring level in the game. It's a clear rip of of Mario Kart's Rainbow Road. It has no coins or emeralds to collect, and it's a straight path the whole way through. Beating this level allows you to see the credits, or "ending."
