Overview
"The Super Sonic Special Search and Smash Squad" was the pilot episode presented to ABC when it came time for DiC to submit an example of what would be airing on the network. ABC wasn't too pleased, and they didn't accept the show at all, leading to the creation of "Sonic the Hedgehog" (or SatAM). This show was doomed to run on syndication through various networks for its life of 65 episodes with weekday premieres. This episode's history reflects its quality: a poorly animated, scripted ripoff of Looney Toons' Road Runner.
Sonic and Tails run across the countryside of the planet Mobius. Their play doesn't last for long: they're caught by Scratch and Grounder as soon as they stop for a breath. Sonic buys himself time by jogging their memory about how they first met. As the scene drifts into a flashback that takes up the whole episode, Sonic and Tails are walking through a deserted town. It turns out the town is deserted because a bunch of bounty hunters have shown up for a convention. Sonic decides to check it out and sneaks into the crowd for a front row seat.
Dr. Robotnik has called every bounty hunter on the planet to a contest: capture Sonic the Hedgehog, "dead or otherwise," with a prize of one billion mobians. Sonic escapes and the attendees give chase into a nearby forest. One by one, Sonic tricks them into falling off cliffs, running into walls, or killing themselves in other manners.
Disheartened, Robotnik uses all his "fine witted genius" to devise a new plan for capturing the hedgehog. Using various materials, such as rotten eggs and college textbooks, he creates the ultimate robot to lead his new branch: the Super Sonic Special Search and Smash Squad. The robot that emerges from the experiment, "the ultimate in hedgehog hunters," is Scratch. Robotnik decides to clone Scratch to make him twice as effective, but Scratch pulls an extra lever on the machine resulting in the creation of Grounder. Scratch and Grounder begin to feud amongst themselves in debate about who's better, but Robotnik ends the arguement by throwing a table at them. One of Robotnik's maintenance robots, Coconuts, overhears the whole conversation and decides to capture Sonic himself.
Sonic and Tails are once again running around, but this time they pass by a chili dog stand. Hungry and eager, Sonic gets impatient when the vendor doesn't respond. He turns himself around, revealing his identity as Coconuts, and the chili dog stand turns into a giant robot equipped with huge artillery canons. Sonic destroys the robot and leaves Coconuts tied up in a strand of wieners.
Scratch and Grounder show off their own plan: a brick wall painted over to match the landscape in the middle of the road. They will drop the wall when Sonic runs by on the road. Grounder finds Sonic and Tails and throws a pumpkin onto Sonic's head to get his attention. As Sonic chases him towards the trap, he figures out the plan and drops the wall onto Grounder.
Their next plan is to capture Sonic in a deep pit in the ground by luring him with a "beautiful mobian." They manage to capture him, but Sonic breaks out with a spin attack. Sonic disguises himself as a doctor and tricks the two into falling into the pit as they look in to find Sonic. Sonic tells them that an outbreak of "robot chicken pox" has been reported in the area, and he needs to examine. The rest is history.
The final plan they come up with is the most logical yet. Using a grapple hook, Grounder swings from a tree and captures Tails as he and Sonic run by. Wanting to save Tails, Sonic gives himself up. Scratch tosses him into a cage and restrains Tails in a medieval guillotine box. Coconuts pops out and attacks Scratch and Grounder so that he can claim the reward money for himself.
Sonic tricks Coconuts into putting Scratch and Grounder in the cage with him, and runs out as soon as the door is open. He pushes Coconuts into the cage and locks it. Robotnik arrives to take the would-be captured Sonic and is tricked into cutting off his Eggmobile's engines in a dust cloud when Sonic tells him he's three feet above the ground. Sonic and Tails run away as Robotnik crash lands into the cage, resulting in an explosion.
After the flashback, we find Sonic and Tails still hanging upside-down from the tree they were captured in at the beginning of the episode. Sonic performs a spin attack and frees Tails to break out. They run off into the distance...

Tails: "We're surrounded, Sonic! Call 911!"
Sonic: "No way, Tails! This is nothing! 911 is for real emergencies! If we called 911 for assistance, someone who really needed help would be in trouble! If there's a fire or someone is trying to break into your home, or someone is hurt, that's when you call 911. One person's dumb joke could be another person's disaster.
