Sonic and the Secret Rings is Sonic's Wii debut. Unlike the three dimensional Sonic games before it, Secret Rings is on rails, allowing the player only to steer Sonic left and right. Because of this, it is often compared to the Genesis games in terms of design, although that is a rather inaccurate description. Secret Rings is a new type of Sonic game all in itself. Released at a time when Sonic had hit his all-time low on the Xbox 360 and PS3, Secret Rings was somewhat of a savior to the series. It was a giant risk for Sega to take because it broke nearly every trend. Sonic moves forward on his own. The buttons let you brake and jump - that's it. Although the game is not without its flaws, it was fresh enough to revive the series' mainstream appeal.

The World of the Book
Sonic is...still? That's a rare sight. Anyways, he's sleeping peacefully, when all of a sudden some strange voice wakes him up. He looks around, half awake, and sees a SCANTILY CLAD WOMAN OH MY GOD! Although this initially reinforces the notion that he's dreaming, the intruder is indeed in his room, and she introduces herself as "Shahra, the Genie of the Ring." Since she can't relate to Sonic because he's never heard of Arabian Nights (much like about half of this game's audience), she begins telling Sonic all about her troubles, casually mentioning that she's from the book, which of course is perfectly normal.
She hands Sonic a book, and he opens it to find that the pages are blank. Her anxiety issues can be traced back to "Erazor Djinn," an evil guy who lives in the book with her. He used his "evil magic" to become "more powerful," and he doesn't want to be in the book. So basically, he's "absorbing" it all to get out of it. Shahra thinks that Sonic, the "legendary blue hedgehog," is the only one who can stop this dastardly ink-ridden, osmosic scheme. She gives him the ring, and he rubs it, binding Sharha to his wishes. First he wishes for some hankies, because apparently he has a cold. Then he wishes to go to the world of the Arabian Nights, and the first stage begins.

Erazor Appears - Played after "Paragraph 08" of The Lost Prologue
As Sonic and Sharha run along the pages of the tutorial book, Erazor Djinn suddenly appears. He tells of his plan to get the seven Chaos Emeralds World Rings. He thinks Shahra has them, but she claims she doesn't, and he just gets in sort of a pissy mood in general. He fires a flaming arrow at Shahra, but Sonic jumps in front of her to take the blow. Erazor explains that unless Sonic collects all seven rings for him, the fire will burn out. If the fire, now radiating from Sonic's chest, burns out, Sonic's life will be "forfeit." And with that interesting word choice, he's off.

The King is Found! - Played after "Reach the Goal" of "Sand Oasis"
Sonic finally reaches the king's palace after completing the trap-laden circuit around the Sand Oasis. He enters the palace and finds the king hiding in a pot. Because the king looks conspicuously like Eggman, Sonic places the evil doctor's identity upon his highness, only to be silenced by Shahra. King Shahryar is heavily insulted by Sonic's accusation, and demands that his guards seize the "spiky blue thing" at once before realizing that he has no 'guards' to speak of. Before Sonic can make a cheesy comeback remark, the king is kidnapped by Erazor. Now you're on a mission not only to collect the seven rings, but also to save Eggman Eggman's cousin roommate twice removed King Shahryar.

Note that from here on out, the story may unfold in multiple sequential orders depending on what missions you choose to complete. The order on this page follows the game's intended order, but there's nothing wrong with mixing it up.
Grateful Ali-Baba - Played after completing ___________ in "Sand Oasis"
Tails is cornered by Erazor's henchmen! As usual, Sonic shows up to save the day. Sonic once again makes the identity mistake and, the not-Tails stranger introduces himself (herself?) as Ali-Baba. Ali promises to help out if Sonic and Shahra need help, but he doesn't really say how, so the two parties part ways for now.

Sand Scorpion Appears - Played after completing __ missions in "Sand Oasis"
After seeing Sonic and Shahra playing around in the Sand Oasis, Erazor awakens a giant enemy scorpion! Shahra's magic is too weak to defeat it, and she gets depressed. Sonic promises to get her happy again by the end of their adventure. Fortunately, you don't have to fight him now if you don't want to.

Yellow World Ring - Played after defeating the boss in "Sand Oasis"
Sonic and Shahra find the Yellow World Ring lying by the remains of the Sand Scorpion. Shahra tries to pick it up, but she can't. Sonic touches it, and it zaps him. Unsure of what just happened, Shahra begins to tell a legend that says "a blue hedgehog from another world will appear" to save the world of the Arabian Nights. She also tells him that the rings are the key to a portal between the worlds, and the one who collects the seven rings will be offered as a sacrifice for its opening. Sonic isn't too happy to hear that, but he decides to keep collecting them anyways because the flaming arrow in his chest will kill him if he doesn't.

Rescuing the King - Played after defeating ________ missions in Dinosaur Jungle
Sonic finally catches up to the giant bird-thing carrying the king. He screams for help, and the bird lets go. Sonic saves him from his fall at the last moment with a swift move of his feet.
